‘Barclays To Issue Smart Card Readers For Home Banking’

In what could signal the beginning of a rollout of chip-based handheld readers in the massive UK banking card market, large British bank Barclays has disclosed it will begin issuing half a million smart card readers to customers to secure home banking.
The distribution of the readers, supplied by France-based smart card vendor Gemalto, could lead to public announcements of similar projects from other banks, and perhaps use of the technology for Internet shopping, according to UK payments industry sources……
